JourneyForth 2024 Summer Reading Challenge
Researchers agree that leisure reading has myriad benefits for students from improving academic achievement to reducing stress. Reading as little as 15 minutes a day can have a significant impact.
To encourage your student(s) to develop a habit of reading, JourneyForth is hosting our annual Summer Reading Challenge from June 1 to August 19, 2024.
What is the challenge? To complete the JourneyForth Summer Reading Challenge, each participant must read, or be read to, for at least 15 minutes a day for 40 days between June 1 and August 19. Days do not need to be consecutive.
Who can enter? Parents and/or Guardians (United States residents only) may enroll their children ages 4-17.
What counts towards the reading requirement? Participants may read any book of their choosing, in any genre, and any format.
- Print books
- eBooks
- Audiobooks
- Graphic novels
- Reading aloud to someone
- Listening to someone else read aloud
Are participants required to read books from the suggested reading lists? Not at all! Students enjoy reading more when they are allowed to pick out books that interest them. The titles on our reading lists are merely suggestions. We urge parents/guardians to assist their children in choosing reading material.
What are the prizes? New this year—readers who complete the challenge will receive a small prize pack, while supplies last. Prizes will be mailed on Fridays starting July 19, 2024. In addition, we will hold weekly book drawings; five winners will be randomly chosen each week on July 17, 24, & 31 and August 7 & 14. At the end of the challenge, we will randomly choose nine grand prize winners (three from each age group) who will receive a tote bag containing JourneyForth titles. The completion form serves as the entry form to both the weekly and the grand prize drawings. The form must be submitted on or before August 19, 2024 in order to receive a completion prize and be entered into the prize drawings. For more information, please read our rules and requirements (PDF).
How is reading logged? Parents/Guardians may download a reading log for each child participating in the program. After your child has completed their goal of reading for 15 minutes a day for 40 days, please submit the online completion form. To be eligible for prizes, the completion form must be submitted on or before August 19, 2024. A completion certificate is also available.
