Testing & Evaluation

Iowa Assessments™

The Iowa Tests are nationally standardized tests and meet most state requirements. This assessment is available year-round, and either the complete battery or select parts of the test may be administered.

Choosing the Right Test Grade

If you will be testing and postmarking tests for return on or before July 31, test for the grade your student has finished or will finish soon.

August 1 or later, test for the grade your child just started or will be starting.

Paper/Pencil Tests

Form E tests have updated questions and compare your students with newer norms so that they can be more accurately assessed. The test booklets also have full-color illustrations.

Online Testing

Students must finish subtests within the allotted times. Your student should be able to read sentences without parental assistance.

The group nature of online testing requires students to move within the allotted time for each subtest. See our testing schedule for details on how much time students have for each subtest.

Requirements:

The following steps can be completed before or after ordering but must be done prior to testing:

The Iowa Assessments cover a wide range of skills and knowledge. For a full list of subtests and testing times, please see our Form E Schedule (PDF).

Some forms have restrictions (embargoes) in certain states. For the most up-to-date information, please check our list of state restrictions.

Test Administrator Qualifications for Paper/Pencil Tests

It is critical that the publisher's guidelines for administering the tests be followed precisely—please review the tester qualifications. For help locating a tester or for the tester application, please visit our Test Administrator support page.

The Cognitive Abilities Test Form 7 is the newest abilities test that BJU Press offers and uses norms from 2017. It divides each battery into three short subtests, allowing students to take breaks, as needed.

Gifted programs often require abilities test scores. If you want to help your child place into one of these, please check the gifted program requirements to see whether the tests we offer are acceptable.

Here are a few other benefits outlined in the Product Guide for CogAT Form 7:

  1. New design elements
  2. New subtests and item types
  3. More friendly for English language learners

CogAT Form 7 is offered only in combination with the Iowa Assessments™ Form E.
