How to Homeschool

Thinking about homeschooling? We’ve got you covered. After years of helping families get started with homeschooling, we’ve put together a simple list of steps for you to follow as you begin your homeschool journey.

Step 1

Decide your why.

  • Consider your reasons for homeschooling, such as a biblical worldview foundation, protecting your children, or providing a flexible learning experience.
  • Set goals based on your reasons.
  • Be prepared to change your plans and goals as needed.
Step 2

Decide when to start.

  • You can start at any age, even high school.
  • No time is a bad time, even mid-year.
    • If you decide to start mid-year, here are some things to consider:
      • Can your curriculum be started at any time in the year?
      • Will your children need to restart their grade?
      • Does your curriculum allow you to skip content your children have already learned?
      • Can your homeschool begin fast enough to meet legal requirements?
  • For some families, year-round homeschooling offers the best option.
  • It’s best to give yourself 1–2 months for planning, especially as a new homeschool parent.
Step 3

Research legal requirements.

  • Homeschooling is legal in all states but check the requirements for your specific state.
  • Freedom to homeschool varies in other countries.
Step 4

Make a plan for your first year.

  • Determine what method you want to use (independent learning, parent-led, or a little bit of both).
  • Order your materials.
    • Connecting with a HomeWorks Consultant or attending homeschool conventions can be helpful in making decisions as well as with finding discounts.
  • Plan your schedule with the Homeschool Hub.
  • Decide what kind of records you’ll keep.
    • Make sure you keep legal requirements in mind when planning this.
  • Pick a place where your homeschooling will all happen.
  • Remember to keep your plan fluid so that you can adjust as you go.
